EXECUTION OF DEEP SOIL MIXING WORK ON CLAYEY SILT AT EAST JAVA, INDONESIA

SYNOPSIS
Deep Soil Mixing Ground Improvement using the Wet Soil Mixing method introduces binder material into the in-situ soil and can be applied to soft clays, silt, and fine-grained sands with low water content. In the wet method, a specialized mixing tool is inserted into the ground and comprises single or multiple drilling shafts, transverse beams, and auger bits. Penetration and withdrawal of the mixing tool are assisted by cement slurry flowing out of nozzles strategically located at the end of the soil auger.
This presentation will provide an overview of Deep Soil Mixing work under challenging ground conditions in East Java, Indonesia. The project is located in Probolinggo, 910 km from Jakarta and 143 km from Surabaya airport. DSM was installed using both single- and double-shaft rigs, with flow rates up to 65 liters/min. The dry condition of clayey silt posed a challenge, as evidenced by in-situ sample recovery. In-situ Twin PVC Pipe sampling was conducted to obtain DSM samples from the top 4 m, and the characteristics and features of the samples were compared across different cement consumptions and water-cement ratios, using 6 trial columns at the initial stage, with corresponding UCS strength results.
